Are Cheap Lawn Mowers a Waste of Money?

If you're looking for a new lawn mower, you've probably found the prices can be dramatically different from one brand or model to another. You can find cheap lawn mowers for under 0, while others can cost several thousand. At first glance, there may not seem to be enough difference to justify the extra money, but is that really the case? Let's look at some of the differences.

Used Zero Turn Mowers

One of the big differences is the power output of the engine. Electric mowers and smaller gas models have fairly low horsepower ratings, which translates into less power at the blades. If you don't keep the blades sharp or you regularly cut longer grass, this can make the job a lot harder to manage.

Used Zero Turn Mowers

Larger - and more expensive - mowers have higher power ratings which translates into more cutting power at the blades. This extra power can help overcome slightly dull blades, although if you let the blades get too dull it's still not going to completely solve it.

Another difference is in the features and accessories that are available. Cheap lawn mowers typically don't have many - if any - accessories for things like mulching, so if you plan to use your mower for more than just basic lawn maintenance you'll probably be better off spending a little more to get the features you need.

The reliability and durability of the lawnmower is another factor in the price. If you're looking at a commercial lawn mower, the price is going to be considerably higher than the typical homeowner model. The extra cost is going to get you a better built machine, with stronger parts, more power from the engine and other extras that a professional lawn cutter would need.

Then there are the really obvious differences, of course, like a riding mower or zero-turn mower versus a smaller push-behind. Obviously, you'll pay a lot more for a riding mower than you will for a standard push mower. And if you're looking at riding mowers, a zero turn model will set you back more than a traditional front-steer model will.

Cheap lawn mowers are fine for lots of people, but do your homework before deciding. Spending less money now can wind up costing you more in the long run if you get a mower that isn't up to the job you need done.
